Berlin - a year on (although I never went)

Berlin / Morning Song / Start / Sea Panic / Alter Ego

It feels like I’ve been sat on an EP for about a year now (insert pun about standing up here)… admittedly the recording I should be doing very soon will feature songs written since that time, but this whole thing is ready to come out, and some of the songs never even heard by others feel almost ‘old’ in terms of their content, and also their familiarity, but rather than this being a negative thing, I think they’ve had far more time to breathe and develop even subconsciously as I perform them.

Yet I think the reason it actually feels ‘old’ to me personally is that I’ve began to write songs a little differently now, beginning with a different starting point than chords, which is my usual method. I’ve tried more to start with pen and paper, and also composing complete songs on (music comp program) Logic before even touching an actual instrument or thinking of lyrics. Its kind of interesting, but I’m yet to see if it will ‘improve’ my songwriting or not. I just want things to be able to come from a different place and not feel stuck if I can’t come up with an initial idea in one way, theres more options and outlets.

Regardless of all this, recording those familiar tracks is really exciting. Its been a year and a half since recording Division, and I look forward to developing these songs further in a creative environment. Hopefully taking time over them will make for a good recording. Its about a year on from when some of the songs were written, and having that reflective period since the subject matter occurred makes it really interesting for me. I’m not sure what I’m trying to say. The point is, I’m ready to start, and start again, all at once.
